62 checks to find out whether the Google September 2026 spam update hit your site, or whether something else moved your numbers.

Google announced the update on its Search Status Dashboard and named no specific target. Spam updates improve the automated systems that enforce Google’s existing spam policies. No new rules came with it.

A drop during the rollout is not proof that Google flagged your site. Work through the checks and mark each one Clear, Possible issue or Not applicable. We build links for a living, so the link spam section goes into more detail than most checklists do. Your answers stay in your browser.

FAQ

Questions about the September 2026 spam update

Does a drop during the rollout mean we were hit?

No. Timing on its own proves nothing. Rankings move in both directions while an update rolls out, and a demand dip, a tracking fault or a site release can land in the same week. Confirm the loss in Search Console, segment it, and rule out other causes before you decide the update is responsible.

Is a spam update the same as a penalty?

No. The update is automated. Nothing appears in the Manual Actions report because of it, and there is no reconsideration request to file. If the Manual Actions report does show something, that is a separate issue with its own fix and appeal process.

When will the rollout finish?

Google said it may take up to two weeks, which puts the latest finish around October 8, 2026. Google posts a completion note on the Search Status Dashboard. Hold off on judging the final impact until that note appears.

We bought guest posts. Are we at risk?

Google’s policy treats paid links that pass ranking credit as link spam. Paid placements should carry rel=”sponsored” or rel=”nofollow”. If spam links were propping up your rankings, Google says any benefit they passed is gone once its systems neutralise them, and cleaning them up will not bring that value back. Recovery comes from earning links that do not break the policy.

How long does recovery take?

Google says its systems can take months to recognise that a site now complies with its spam policies. Removing the violating pattern is the start. Some sites only recover after a later update.

Where is my progress saved?

In this browser only, using local storage. Nothing is sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data or switching devices will reset the checklist, so download the CSV or Markdown report if you want a copy.
